Lincoln suffered with what was termed "melancholy." This is likely called depression today. He was self conscious of his appearance, and considered himself to be even ugly. He also considered his education to be lacking at times. He was self taught, but by anyone's standard, did a superb job. He even self studied to become a lawyer. I have read that he was an humble and patient man and you can almost see this in his eyes. I guess if anyone tried his patience it would have been Mary. I have also read that they were madly in love yet I'm sure she must have been at least in part, the reason he would withdraw into his depressive moods at times. Then again the man was called upon to endure what seems to be unbearable sadness and stress. Of four sons only the oldest, Robert survived to adulthood. Losing his sons, soothing Mary, and having a great nation look to your leadership to know if it will survive as a nation or crumble, I'd say any behavior exhibited by this great president was completely justified.
