Ares was the God of War. He was the son of Zeus and Hera, and their least favorite child. He would cause violence for no reason, and was bloodthirsty. If he was in a battle, and his side was losing, he'd switch sides, which hints that he might have been a coward deep down. He often fought and killed for no reason other than amusement. The astronomical symbol of the planted ares is the symbol used to represent the male gender, perhaps as a way of demonstrating man's unusual need for violence and roughhousing. In many ways, Athena would have made a better War Goddess, as she is also the Goddess of stratedgy and tactics, and is often referred to as, "the warrior goddess."
