John Chrysostom (c. 347-407) followed the method of Biblical exegesis promoted at Antioch, namely seeking an exact literal interpretation by following closely the grammar of the Greek text. He was against the allegorical interpretation promoted at Alexandria. Much later the Protestant Reformers regarded him highly as they sought to return to the principle of 'sola scriptura', scripture alone, in contrast to their 'opponents.' The Alexandrian method apparently lending itself to some rather far-fetched interpretations foreign to scriptural principles and allowing persons to impose a foreign meaning on scripture.
