John F. Kennedy was very involved in the United States space program. One of JFK's main goals during his presidency was to send an American safely to the Moon by the end of the decade. This decision was largely based on the fact that the United States was in a "space race" with the Soviet Union, and Kennedy was under a lot of pressure to surpass them. JFK's goal came to fruition on July 20, 1969 when the first American man walked on the Moon. Unfortunately JFK did not live to see that happen.
