Probably the greatest obstacle that Marie Curie had to overcome was the fact that she was a female. In the era she lived in, it was unusual for a female to attend a university and obtain a degree. She was even denied a position at Krakow University just because she was female.

Another obstacle was the fact that her family had lost their property and fortunes. In order for Marie' sister, Bronislawa, to obtain her medical degree, Marie went to work as a governess to help pay for Bronislawa's schooling.
