You should be prepared for aftershocks

• Quickly escape the building you're in if you haven't done so already and if it doesn't look sturdy enough to stay up
• Stay away from downed power lines because they might electrify you
• DO NOT DRIVE. There might have been damage to the roads.
• If you're not with family members or friends, try to send text messages to them or wait at the spot you had planned to meet up with them
• Stay prepared for aftershocks. If the earthquake was huge, then it could be followed by big aftershocks.
• Stay away from falling debris during an aftershock.
• Stay in a cleared area where it's less likely you'll get hit by poles, street lights, power lines, and trees

I'm trying to stay calm while I'm writing this for your benefit and I know I'll follow my own advice as well, because where I live--Long Beach, California--we just had a 3.7 earthquake on November 5th, 2010, and it scared the daylights out of me. I was near the epicenter. I was in my school and it shook pretty hard where I was. So stay safe during an earthquake. You never know when it might happen.

After earthquakes there are often aftershocks which are like mini earthquakes - at least not as bad as the original quake. Rescue teams are put into action if people are missing and rubble is cleared away. Be wary of buildings and structures. They might be damaged and on the point of collapsing. Water pipes, both freshwater and sewage might have ruptured. Try to make sure your drinking water is safe. Boil it or purify it unless you can drink water collected before the quake. Gas lines and electrical installations might be damaged enough to be fire hazards. Or electrocution, or gas poisoning.

Looting can happen. be ready to defend yourself, or preferably - hide.

Look for any small fires and put those out.

Clean up any spilled flammable liquids.

DO NOT turn off your gas valve unless you suspect there's a leak. It may be harmful to turn it back on yourself.

If opening any closets or doors, open slowly. Objects may fall.

Check for structural damage. If there is any, GET OUT IMMEDIATELY. The aftershocks may cause further damage which can be detrimental if anyone is inside.

Be aware of animal behavior. They can become aggressive and attack.

SPILLS--clean up any spilled medicines, drugs, or other harmful materials such as bleach, lye, gas;

DOWNED OR DAMAGED CHIMNEYS--Approach with caution--don't use damaged chimney (it could start fire or let poisonous gases into your house;

FALLEN ITEMS--beware of items tumbling off shelves when you open doors of closets and cupboards;

CHECK FOOD AND WATER SUPPLIES--Do not eat or drink anything from open containers near shattered glass; If power is off, plan meals to use up foods that will spoil quickly or frozen foods (food in the freezer should be good for at least a couple of days; Don't light your kitchen stove if you suspect a gas leak;

USE BBQ or camp stoves, outdoors only for emergency cooking; If your water is off you can drink supplies from water heaters, melted ice cubes or canned vegetables (AVOID drinking water from swimming pools or especially spas--it may have too many chemicals in it to be safe.)

You will need;

Food, water, Shelter, appropriate clothing for the environment both for day and night. An FM radio to listen to Emergancy Transmissions, something to create heat for cooking
