The west wind blows from west to east. It originates in the west and moves towards the east.

The side or quarter toward which the wind blows is the lee quarter, or side. the side from which the wind is blowing is the windward quarter, or side.

A wind that comes from the southwest blows toward the northeast.
Near the equator, the wind generally blows from east to west in a pattern known as the trade winds. These winds are caused by the Coriolis effect and the temperature differences between the equator and poles.
