The compound XCl is made up of the elements X (representing an unknown element) and chlorine (Cl). The subscript indicates that there is one atom of X bonding with one atom of chlorine in the compound.
Bromine in carbon tetrachloride is a brown-colored solution and used as a chemical test. When drops of bromine/carbon tetrachloride are added to a solution containing an unknown compound and the brown-colored bromine solution disappears, that means that the unknown compound contains carbon-carbon double bonds (since it absorbed the bromine solution). On the other hand, if the brown-colored bromine solution doesn't disappear then it means that no carbon double bonds are present. This is called a "Bromine Test."
They use a number called a mole. This many atoms of an element equals its atomic weight in the periodic table. Molecular weight is the sum of atomic weight. Silver has an atomic weight of 108 grams/mole and Chlorine is 35.4 grams/mole. This makes AgCl 108 + 35.4 = 143.4 grams/mole. The % Chlorine is the atomic weight of Chlorine divided by the molecular weight of AgCl. 1 mole of AgCl would contain 35.4 grams / 143.4 grams = 25% Chlorine by weight. 1.22 grams AgCl would contain (0.25)*(1.22) = 0.30 grams of Cl. To find the Chlorine in the unknown, divide the weight of Chlorine from the experiment by the initial weight of the unknown. 0.30 grams / 0.63 grams = 0.48 = 48% Cl by weight.
You should NEVER add acid (lowering pH) to an unknown liquid (or solid as well), it can be very dangerous. For example: suppose the unknown happens to be hypochlorite (bleach powder solution, desinfectant): when you add acid (any will do) then CHLORINE gas might escape which is a VERY TOXIC gas, causing acute pulmonary (o)edema.
