Ancient Egypt was built around the Nile River. The river served as an artery of transportation wherever possible. However, at a number of places, rapids or cataracts prevented river traffic. In those places boats had to be taken from the river and moved around the cataracts and the relaunched on the other side. They could also be unloaded and then different boats reloaded beyond the cataract. The ancient Egyptians did not have the technology to develop locks.
