uluru as it is now called is the result of the orosion of a mountain rangethat laid sand down in a basin formed about 900 million years ago. the sand gathered at the bottom of this ancient sea bed until about 300 million years ago at which time it was once again raised up out of the sea and has been weathering or eroding ever since.

It is not known when Ayers Rock, now known by its indigenous name of Uluru, was formed, as pscientists have not been able to come to any agreement.

Traditional scientific thought is inclined towards the age being 550 million years. However, this is contradicted by the fact that the arkose sandstone which makes up Uluru is composed of jagged, inconsistently shaped grains of many different sizes, while the feldspars are fresh and shiny. This is evidence of a fairly fast deposit of just a few years, according to flood geologists (see the Crystalinks weblink below) but it does not give any further indication of when such a deposit occurred.

It wasn't actually Built. it is what is left of sand that was washed down the peterman ranges 550 million years ago. the fan shaped mounds of sand were eventually covered by ocean about 50 million years later. this compressed the sand into sandstone, after another 50 million years central Australia was once again on dry land. the movement of the Earth weathering etc brought about the shape and position that this original body of sand now finds itself in. (They may have built the big banana but no one built Uluru).
