It began as a trickle of melting snow that was joined by numerous other trickles that formed the smallest of streams. This rivulet joined others to become a wash and then a creek and then a river. In due course it formed a rampaging river, Hell Bentto find an ocean. It carved a path through thousands of feet of stone, joined by other rivers in its quest until it reached the Sea of Cortez as a torrent.

It continues its remarkable journey today, still beginning as a trickle, but it ends as a somber ooze. It has been used up and exploited by man and it has provided power and agriculture and drinking water for millions.

When a river slows down what type of sediment is deposited first?

When a river slows down, the first type of sediment to be deposited is typically the coarser material, such as sand and gravel. This occurs because these larger particles require more energy to be transported and are dropped as the flow velocity decreases. As the river continues to slow, finer sediments like silt and clay are deposited subsequently. This process contributes to the formation of riverbanks and deltas over time.

Does material travel faster when the river is flowing down a steep slop or across flat land?

Material will travel faster in a river flowing down a steep slope. As the water slows down, the material will also slow down.
