Technology has come a long way since the first maps were made by European and other Old World explorers. In these modern times there are satellites that provide global imaging of the Earth's surface, but in the olden times people had to rely on what they could see in order to map out routes or just the shape of a whole continent. For example, when Antarctica was discovered, early explorers might have marked the frozen ice in some places as land, but with modern technology we can see what is land and what isn't. In short: the better technology gets, the more it puts earlier methods of mapping to shame.
