All isotopes of astatine are radioactive with quite short half-lives (the longest-lived isotope has a half-life of only about 8 hours), so it's found in nature only in extremely minute amounts (at any given time there is probably less than an ounce of astatine in all of Earth's crust) as a decay product of other radioactive elements. It's generally synthesized artificially by bombarding bismuth-209 with alpha particles.
