Ares asked Percy Jackson to retrieve his missing shield, which had been stolen and was located in a diner. He wanted Percy to return the shield to him as a display of loyalty and to prove himself as a worthy warrior. This task was part of Percy's quest in "The Lightning Thief," which ultimately led him to confront various challenges and enemies along the way.
Percy begins to suspect that Ares was taking orders from someone because he notices that Ares is behaving strangely and seems to be protecting something. Ares also implies that someone else is involved when he taunts Percy about the Lightning Thief quest being a setup. These clues lead Percy to believe that Ares may have been working for a greater power.
Ares backed off from the fight with Percy because he realized Percy had the potential to be a powerful demigod and did not want to harm him unnecessarily. Additionally, Ares had no interest in a prolonged fight if Percy was not willing to give up the bolt, as his main goal was to retrieve the stolen item.

If Percy will recover Ares' shield from a theme park, Ares will give him transportation, information, and food
Percy retrieved Ares' shield at Waterland. He also found Aphrodite's scarf, which was placed in the Big Attic.
In "The Last Olympian," Percy Jackson makes a deal with Ares, the god of war, to retrieve his shield from a diner where they fought. In exchange for returning the shield, Percy asks Ares to let him and his friends leave safely and to ensure that they won't be harmed. Becuase Percy found out that Ares teamed up with Luke who stole the bolt and hid the bolt in a bag that he gave percy. The lighting bolt didn't show up in the bag though until he got to the underworld
