Aqua regis (Latin: water of king) is the triviale name of the 3:1-mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3), capable of dissolving (by oxidation) of gold, the King of metals.

The first step reaction (oxidation) will only go further when followed by the 2nd step of complex forming to the tetrachloroauraat ion AuCl4-, because too much Au3+will stop the oxidation.

  1. Au(s) + 3 NO3-(aq) + 6 H+(aq) → Au3+(aq) + 3 NO2(g) + 3 H2O(l)
  2. Au3+(aq) + 4 Cl-(aq) → AuCl4-(aq)
