Carbon Dioxide is the greenhouse gas of most current concern. It is created by burning any fuel composed of hydrocarbons, such as wood, oil, gasoline, coal, etc. The reason it is of so much current concern is that the level of carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO2) in our air has gone from 280 ppm (parts per million) to almost 400 ppm. In the last 50 to 75 years we have burned about one-half of all the oil which earth accumulated over perhaps one-million years plus lots of coal, natural gas, and wood. A lot of the carbon dioxide was absorbed by the oceans and the earth, so the 400 ppm might go much higher.

Methane is another greenhouse gas. It is created by people and animals. It increases as human population increases and as our food animal production increases.

Nitrous oxide is yet another greenhouse gas. It is created by burning. The nitrogen comes from air.

CFC-12 is a serious greenhouse gas, but its use has been largely phased out to protect our ozone layer. HCFC-22 is also serious, but it is being phased out to protect the ozone layer.

Other greenhouse gases include nitrogen trifluoride, and sulfur hexafluoride.

Water vapor is the main greenhouse gas.

Greenhouse effect is not all bad. Without it earth would be too cold for us, but too much greenhouse can make our earth too hot.
