I did a science fair project and we grew plants inside, with no wind, and the plants in the rocks grew better than the plants that were growing from the sand and dirt from outside.

======

It depends on the type of plant, some plants are native to rocky soils, others, sandy soils, others clay soils etc. Each of these various media have different advantages and disadvantages for plant growth.

In general a "good" or "ideal" medium for plant growth is one that:

  • is light weight, but heavy enough to maintain good plant anchorage.
  • well drained so that excess water is drained away, but adequate water reserves remain.
  • has components (such as humus or clay) to retain moisture and act as exchange sites for minerals and fertilisers.
  • contains a fair amount of course material to enable air pockets or pore spaces to be created in the soil.
  • has a neutral pH, pH requirements differ from plant to plant, but a soil pH of 6.5 - 7 is adequate for most growth requirements
  • has a balanced mineral content i.e. does not contain excessive amounts of salts

Do plants grow the biggest in soil than sand?

No, plants usually grow the biggest in soil because it contains more nutritional elements under technical conditions. However, there are certain plant species which have adapted to the special conditions needed in order to grow in sand and therefore, these plants can grow bigger in sand. Moreover, there are "plant-social" reasons, e.g. when a plant is resistant to salt can grow better in sand than others which are not, so it grows alone and without "competition" and it grows better.

Why does soil grow plants better than sand?

Soil provides a more suitable environment for plant growth due to its higher nutrient content, ability to hold water, and presence of beneficial microorganisms. Sand, on the other hand, lacks nutrients, has poor water retention, and does not support the microbial activity necessary for healthy plant growth.

Why do very few plants grow in sea beaches?
