The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is 10,000 miles long or 16,000 kilometers.
it corresponds to the south american, african, north american, and eurasian plates
The longest mountain range in the world is the Andes, which stretches for about 7,000 kilometers (4,300 miles) along the western edge of South America. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is also extensive, extending approximately 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) under the ocean, but it is primarily underwater. The Rocky Mountains, while significant, are shorter at about 4,800 kilometers (3,000 miles). Thus, the Andes holds the title as the longest mountain range overall.
Knowledge of undersea features such as the Midatlantic Ridge gradually grew during the 19th century as accurate hydrographic surveys were made across the world. The ridge is many thousands of miles long, so parts of it would have been discovered at different dates years apart.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the East African Rift are two examples of mountain ranges formed by divergent boundaries. The movement of tectonic plates away from each other at these boundaries causes molten rock to rise to the surface, creating new crust and pushing the existing crust upwards to form mountains.
