Mt. Masherbrum.....the 22nd highest Mt. in the World. Originally named K1 as it was one of several prominent peaks a British Engineer noted from a position some 130 miles to the south. Since there were so many mountains in this part of the World the English only gave names to a few(Mt Everest, for instance, was called Peak #15 until people realized that it was -the- highest in the world), but if a certain peak had a local name, that name would be used in place of letters and numbers. "K1", simply meant the first prominent peak in the Khartoum range that the engineer was surveying(k2 being the second). There are several other "K" mountains , but only a few still are called by their -K- name.

When the British later found that K1 already had a local name, they switched it to that....Mt. Masherbrum.
