When you are exercising, in a normal, healthy system, both of these happen: you breathe deeper and faster, AND your heart rate (pulse rate), increases. How much each of these happen, and how fast they return to "normal", is both a function of how much work you are doing, and how well conditioned/ trained/fit you are.
