The main advantage is for folks like me, who live in an area with a very short growing season: the seeds can be started indoors, much earlier than the seeds would be planted outside. Then, the seedlings can be transplanted outside, when I don't have to worry about them dying because of the cold. Also, you don't have to wonder if your seeds are germinating and there's less likelihood that the birds will eat them.
