The word "gene" stems from the Greek word "genesis", which means "birth".

Charles Darwin's 1868 theory of Pangenesis considered inherited traits that are passed down along the bloodline. In 1903 Wilhelm Johannsen first used the term "gene" in opposition to Charles Darwin's Pangenesis theory. This was eventually published in a book in 1909 called "Elemente der exakten Erblichkeitslehre".
