F, Crick and j.Watson discovered the structure of DNA.
Sir James Watson and Sir Francis Crick first described the molecular structure of DNA correctly. They not only mentioned the fact that DNA is a helical structure, but also described how the constituting molecules are arranged in the helix. The base-pairing, sugar-phosphate backbone were first described by Watson and Crick.

The first thing that happens is a replication structure binds to the DNA molecule. This is usually a signalling molecule or some type of protein. Next, this replication structure attracts DNA helicase enzymes which "unzip" the double stranded helix.

The discovery of the structure of DNA was a culmative effort. After the discovery that the genes were paired, Watson and Crick suggested the first accurate model of DNA structure in the journal of Nature.

Wilkins' X-ray diffraction showed a regular, cyrstal-like structure of DNA. It was when Watson first saw Wilkins' work that his interest in DNA was sparked. Their work overlapped and complemented each other - so differences are difficult to pinpoint.
The tool used to show the structure of DNA was X-ray crystallography. This technique was used by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins to capture the first image of the double helix structure of DNA.
