The first astronomer known to systematically map the stars was the ancient Greek philosopher and astronomer Hipparchus, who lived around 190 to 120 BCE. He created a star catalog that classified and ranked stars based on their brightness and position, laying the groundwork for future astronomical studies. Additionally, earlier cultures, such as the Babylonians, had also created star maps, but Hipparchus is often credited for his more systematic approach.
The first maps were likely drawn on mediums such as clay tablets, papyrus, or animal skins. These early maps were used by ancient civilizations to navigate their surroundings and record important information about their territories.
Medieval maps were typically made out of vellum, a type of parchment made from animal skin. The maps were usually drawn with ink, sometimes with added colors, and often embellished with decorative elements like illustrations or gold leaf.
An astronomer is a scientist who specializes in mapping and studying the fixed stars in the universe. They use telescopes and various instruments to observe and collect data on the positions, movements, and characteristics of stars to better understand the cosmos.
Physical maps show geographical features like mountains and rivers. Political maps display borders, cities, and countries. Topographic maps combine physical and cultural features, showing elevation and man-made structures.
The first recorded constellations date back to ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians and Greeks, who created maps of the stars and named the constellations. The earliest known star catalog was compiled by the ancient Babylonians around 1300 BCE.

AstronomyThe Guide Star Catalog is an online catalog of stars produced for the purpose of accurately positioning and identifying stars satisfactory for use as guide stars by the Hubble Space Telescope program. The first version of the catalog was produced in the late 1980s by digitizing photographic plates and contained about 20 million stars, out to about magnitude 15. The latest version of this catalog contains information for 945,592,683 stars, out to magnitude 21.USNO-B1.0 is an all-sky catalog created by research and operations astrophysicists at the U.S. Naval Observatory, that presents positions, proper motions, magnitudes in various optical passbands, and star/galaxy estimators for 1,042,618,261objects.

The Sumerians and Egyptians certainly had star maps and catalogs, but these have been lost. The oldest star atlas that we have record of was compiled by the Greek-Egyptian astronomer Claudius Ptolemy about 2000 years ago, and his atlas survived only because it was translated into Arabic 1500 years ago, and was discovered in the libraries of Cordova and Toledo, Spain, when "El Cid" conquered the Arabs and unified Spain.
