Who pays astronomers?

Many of them are paid via grants from the government, or they work directly for the government (ex. in an agency such as NASA). Either way, they are paid with taxpayer dollars, if they are paid at all.

Donations, government partly, various companies sponsoring them, etc. For example, it looks good on companies to have their name in space, so they'll sponsor experiments and such.
