Or to phrase the question differently, "Who discovered the correct explanation for the phases of the moon." I too would like to know. Did ancient astronomers know that the moon was reflecting the sun? Did they further discern that the phases were a result of seeing half-illuminated sphere from a different angle.

This drawing by Galileo suggests that he had it figured out, but was he the first: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Galileo_moon_phases.jpg

Which ancient astronomer was the first to use a telescope?

Galileo Gailei is the first person credited with using the telescope for astronomical observations. He did not invent the telescope. He is the first to have seen moons going around Jupiter, the rings of Saturn (though he incorrectly identified them), and that the Moon had cliffs and craters.

Why was Galiloe Galilei the fisrt person to study the stars through a telescope?

Galileo Galilei was not the first person to study the stars through a telescope, but he significantly improved the design of the telescope, making it more powerful for astronomical observations. His observations of celestial bodies such as the Moon, Jupiter’s moons, and sunspots helped revolutionize our understanding of the universe.

What did Thomas Harriot use the telescope for?

Thomas Harriot used the telescope for astronomical observations, specifically to study the Moon. He made detailed maps of the Moon's surface, documenting its craters and mountains. Harriot's observations were significant contributions to the field of astronomy during his time.

What does Galileo have to do with the telescope?

Galileo was the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes, making significant observations that supported the heliocentric model of the solar system. His astronomical discoveries, such as the moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus, revolutionized our understanding of the universe.

What were Galileo's most important contributions to humanity?

Galileo is considered to be the founder of the science of physics, and he was the first person to experimentally test hypotheses in physics; he established the equivalence of gravitational and inertial mass (but not by dropping things off the Leaning Tower of Pisa; that is just a myth). His astronomical observations were also revolutionary since he was the first person to use a telescope to examine the night sky and the astronomical objects therein. He was and remains a great inspiration to all the scientists who have come after him.
