The species of plant known as banksia was named after Sir Joseph Banks, one of the botanists aboard James Cook's ship, the Endeavour, which sailed between 1768 and 1771.

The name Banksia was selected and made public in April 1782 by Carl von Linne or Carolus Linnaeus the Younger.
