Bacterium are examples of prokaryotes, because in order for a cell to be classified as a prokaryote it can't have membrane covered organelles at all, nor can it have a nucleus. The only "organelle", per say for lack of a better word, that a bacterium has would be ribosomes. All it has is a cell wall and cell membrane. (if we are only talking about basic Biology)

A bacteria is an example of a prokaryote because it has these characteristics.
