Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock derives its color from a variety of sources, but usually from the minerals which compose the rock.

Older fossils may not always be found at the bottom layers of rocks due to geological processes like folding, faulting, or erosion, which can disrupt the original order. In these cases, older fossils may be found at higher layers while younger fossils are found in lower layers.
Mosasaur fossils are the remains of large, extinct marine reptiles called mosasaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. These fossils include teeth, bones, and sometimes even preserved soft tissues, providing valuable information about the biology and evolution of these creatures. Some notable mosasaur species include Mosasaurus and Tylosaurus.
Sedimentary rock is the most common type of rock that forms fossils because it is often laid down in layers that can preserve organic remains such as bones or shells. Other types of rocks like volcanic or metamorphic can also contain fossils under certain conditions, but sedimentary rocks are the most favorable for fossil preservation.
Fossils are often rock-colored due to the mineralization process that occurs over time. When an organism dies, its remains can be buried under sediment, where minerals from surrounding soil and water infiltrate the organic material. These minerals replace the organic material or fill the spaces within it, creating a fossil that takes on the colors and characteristics of the surrounding rock. As a result, fossils can appear in various shades depending on the minerals present in their environment.

Then you talk to him and he will ask if want to have another lesson say yes. Then he will teach you how to see dark fossils. Hope I could help!
