Gas giants are large primarily due to their formation process, which involves accumulating massive amounts of gas and ice from the protoplanetary disk surrounding a young star. Their significant size allows them to retain lighter gases, like hydrogen and helium, which contribute to their large volumes. They are cold because their distance from the Sun results in lower temperatures, and their thick atmospheres trap heat poorly compared to terrestrial planets. Additionally, their internal heat comes primarily from gravitational compression rather than solar radiation.

Why are gas giants so cold?

Because of their distance from the sun

What so all the terrestrial planet have in common?

They are all dense and rocky. The gas giants are made of gas and are big. ps. pluto is not a plnet anymore!! ^_^

Why would the gas giants be made of gas when they are so cold?

The gas giants are composed of hydrogen and helium, which can remain in a gaseous state at extremely low temperatures, even lower than thous found in the atmospheres of the gas giants. In reality, though, most of the volume of the gas giants is not gas. Deep within the atmospheres of these planets the enormous pressure renders the hydrogen and helium into a supercritical state, which is characteristics between those of a liquid and a gas. Even deeper the hydrogen enters an exotic metal-like state. The interiors of the gas giants are very hot.

Do the gas giants have volcanoes?

The gas giants have no volcanoes; they are composed entirely or almost entirely of gas, so there is nothing to erupt. However, it should be noted that some of the satellites of the gas giants do have volcanoes.

Why have the Jovian planets retained their atmospheres?

Simply because the gas giants are so big that the force of gravity is sufficient to retain the light gases.

Why do all the gas giants have thick atmospheres?

gravity keeps the gas giants planets gases from escaping so they have thick atmosphere

How does the composition of earths atmosphere differ from the composition of the atmospheres of the gas giants planets?

The Gas Giants have a deep gas atmosphere and earth have a not so deep atmosphere

Why are Gas Giants cold in the surface and warm towards the core?

This is because the gas giants are a lot further away from the sun than we are and therefore the incident sunlight rays reaching the surface are less therefore making the surface gases on these planets cool. The reason that the gases closer to the planets core are hotter has to do with the enormous gravity of these gas giants. The sun too is a gas giant only it is much larger and this tells us something. The suns center is also much hotter than its surface because of the tremendous pressures according to Boyle's law the temperature rises when pressure increases if the volume remains the same. If the gas giants were as big as the sun, then they would reach critical mass and ignite too! But they aren't as big and so their cores just get hot, but not hot enough for fusion. Corey Wood

How are rocky plants different then gas giants?

Please tell me you mean Planets not Plants, that is an odd image. Rocky Planets are made mostly of Rock ie solid stuff. Gas Giants are made mostly of Gas. Most gas giants are much bigger than the rocky planets. So far most of the extra solar planets are gas giants (they are bigger so easier to find)

Gas giants have poisonous atmosphere true or false?

Gas giants do not have atmosphere because if it did our solar system would not be like it is now. So the answer is false.

Does a gas giant planet have craters?

No. Gas giants do not have solid surfaces, so there is nothing for a crater to form on.
