In the context of the environment, carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, are regarded as pollution. Carbon dioxide and methane, another greenhouse gas, are contributing to the enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.
