Small fires are used in several ways to control large fires.
First, prescribed fires can be used as a technique to reduce forest fuel loads during periods of low forest fire risk. If wildfires later occur, they will not be as intense and may not be able to spread beyond natural or man-made boundaries.
During fire suppression, one of the primary techniques is to make a "fuel separation" between burning fuel and the rest of the world. This is generally accomplished by "containing" the fire in a fireline, using hand tools, bulldozers, retardant bombers, or other means.
However, these often leave large unburned areas between the main fire and the fireline, creating a risk that the main fire could burn with enough intensity to "jump the line" and continue. A "backfire" is used under certain circumstances to ignite fuels along the inside of the fireline, while they can be controlled, making a "black area" with very little forest fuel to burn when the main fire arrives.
The other use of small fires in suppression is to "burn out" small unburned areas within the main fire, so that they do not later rekindle and create enough heat to spread to other unburned fuels.
Jobs that protect people from forest fires include firefighters, wildfire prevention specialists, forest rangers, and land management officers. These professionals are responsible for preventing, monitoring, and extinguishing fires to ensure the safety of individuals and communities living near forests.
A forest fire will ALWAYS stop. Furthermore forest fires, usually caused by lightning, are a natural part of the wilderness. In fact several plant species benefit from fires as part of their life cycle. Nothing. Forest Fires are a natural occurence. The scary question is what will happen if hippies keep trying to prevent forest fires! Massive loss of life, massive loss of property, environmental damage, etc; have all happened, and will happen on a much larger scale of controlled burns are not practiced in forested and inhabited areas.
Forest fires are caused by lightning strikes (26% of all fires) or human activity (74%).When the fire is caused by human activity it is from one of the following:Campfires left unattended or not put out properlyAgricultural burning getting out of controlEquipment and machinery releasing heat and sparksDeliberate lighting, like children playing with matches, cigarettes thrown out of cars, farmers burning without permission and arsonists who want to destroy something by fire.Once a fire is started it is very difficult to stop. Gradually, the fire spreads around the forest if not stopped. many animals are forced to find another home. some plants, however, are able to grow even after the fire.
What the human impact on Earth can do to stop wildfires is either be a professional firefighter or some one who knows how to fight fires and have large air vehicles filled with water to put fires out.
To stop people from destroying ozone. We must spread awareness.
When the small fires burn out (long before the main fire gets to them) they leave an area which the main fire cannot cross because the area has already been burned so there is nothing for the main fire to burn there, and so it helps to stop the spread over the main fire from that point on.
"Only YOU can prevent forest fires." Previously, until 2001, it was "Remember - only YOU can prevent forest fires." Originally, in 1944, it was "Smokey says -- Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires," but this was changed to the above in 1947.

If no one tries to stop the fire, they can go on for thousands of miles

They didn't. Most times there was not water available to stop the fires, and if there was it was on a rare occasion that the fire could be stopped. If a farmers was lucky he could get to his water pump before the fire spread and extinguish the flames. But like I said RARELY the fires could be stopped.
Stop, drop, and roll is a phrase to help you remember what to do if your clothing is on fire. Another slogan is "Only you can prevent forest fires."
forest fires kill millions of tree each year. The way to stop it is for people to stay OUT of the wooded area with fire!
Muck fires can be stopped by smothering the fire with soil or sand to deprive it of oxygen. Using water can also help to cool down the embers and halt the spread of the fire. It is important to monitor the area for any reignition of the fire and ensure it is fully extinguished.
Muck fires are difficult to fight. Often the only way to stop a muck fire is to contain it.
