Why are there seven colours in a rainbow?

If the question is why seven colours and not twelve (or any other number) the answer lies with Sir Isaac Newton. Newton was a great believer in significant or spiritual numbering of things. In his understanding seven was a significant number. However a viewing of the spectrum shows six obvious colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet). Newton knew this "couldn't" be right and inserted indigo between blue and violet to make it seven.In reality there are a gradients of colours between each of the adjacent obvious colour and the rainbow could easily have many individual hues.
