Why are you made of matter?

The Universe's original material - after the Big Bang - was mainly hydrogen and helium. There were no significant amounts of heavier elements - those were created through nuclear fusion in stars.

Every time I see an answer to this question it is completely incorrect and it greatly bothers me because this is one of the more interesting and important points that Carl Sagan makes in his book and tv series Cosmos.

Some thirteen plus billion years ago, not too long after the big bang occurred the universe was composed of sub-atomic particles, such as protons, neutrons, and electrons. Eventually these formed the elements hydrogen and eventually helium. The newly formed atoms clumped into what eventually turned into the first stars. Some of these stars were massive enough to go supernova. A supernova is a star that is so massive that when it dies and can no longer resist the forces exerted by gravity it explodes in the most powerful force known in nature and results in the production of a black hole, but much of the matter from the supernova is spat out into the universe. Supernovas are the only known natural phenomenon capable of fusing simple elements like H, and He into the heavier elements which make up our planet earth and its life forms. Humans of course are one of those life forms. Humans are made of mostly oxygen, carbon, and some metals like zinc, potassium, and iron. All of these elements had to first be synthesized in a supernova. Therefore we are truly made of exploded stars that went super nova. This is why Carl Sagan says we are made of star stuff.
