this is because inside a cell, substances move by diffusion, which is very slow, but will do on a molecular level

diffusion is when particles move from a place where there are lots of them together, to where there are less particles or they are further apart

diffusion only works across small distances because it is so slow

if you were just a big cell, nutrients diffusing into your surface would not travel quickly enough to get to the places where they are needed because the distances are too big

so cells have to be small ffor diffusion to be effective

also, toxic waste products building up inside would not diffuse out quickly enough and would damage the systems

this is why we have a complex intake and transport system, so we can get nutrients to the cells, and then toxic products can be removed quickly

Also, the cells within your body have developed to be very different and perform specific roles, eg nerve cells which transmit signals. all these systems could not possibly be performed within one cell
