Why did people believe that the earth is at the center of the universe?

From our perspective on earth, it looks like the earth is stationary and everything else revolves around it. If everything is revolving around the earth, it's logical to conclude that the earth is the center of the solar system.

Interestingly, relativity theory teaches us that there is no universal frame of reference - all frames of reference are equally valid. Therefore it is perfectly correct to say the solar system revolves around the earth, just as it is correct to say the solar system revolves around the sun. The equations describing planetary motion will be more complicated if we choose the earth as our frame of reference, but that is the only difference.

Because human nature is basically self-centered. The belief that there even was a solar system was a stretch, because humans are a deeply spiritual people, and the belief that there's something outside their own patch of rock is somewhat contrary to their mysticism. From their perspective, everything rose and set around Earth, so they concluded that Earth was central to the universe, rather than that Earth spins. Their belief in human superiority, having been blessedly created by a deity from every religion, supported the view that Earth, which is the home of humans, must be the most important part of the universe, and thus the center. Such beliefs still exist, kept alive by ignorance, and organizations like the Flat Earth Society.

To an observer on the surface of the earth, it appears that the earth itself is standing still and the sun, moon, and stars are circling around the earth. It took considerable scientific and mathematical study to figure out that the earth orbits the sun.

However, since we now know that the universe is expanding in all directions, there is a sense in which the earth is actually at the center of the universe, but only in the sense that any point in the universe can be considered the "center."
