A planet is a natural body:

1. In orbit around a sun (or the remnants of a sun)
2. Large enough to have taken on a nearly spherical shape (its gravity has overcome rigid forces that would otherwise maintain a very irregular shape)
3. Has cleared its neighborhood of its orbit of debris.

Pluto has not done the last of these, and is therefore classified as a dwarf planet.
