First off, it was a huge earthquake -- 7.0 magnitude. An earthquake of that size in any country will cause severe damage to buildings.

Before the earthquake hit, Haiti was already an impoverished nation with buildings not able to withstand huge earthquakes. Without proper construction, the buildings were bound to collapse and kill thousands. In addition, Haiti is on an isolated island which makes getting supplies there very difficult, adding to the tragedy.

All four of these reasons exacerbated the situation:

1. Size of the earthquake

2. Poor infrastructure

3. Isolation

4. Poverty

It killed approximately 200,000 people, and left 1 million people homeless.
