Much of North America, and other parts of the globe were covered in ice that was as much as two or three kilometers thick. Remnants of those glaciers are still with us. And also to a lesser extent in some of the Earth's mountain ranges such as the Rocky Mountains.

Much of the precipitation that originated as evaporation from the surface of the oceans fell as snow over the land and formed into glaciers. That was the reason the ocean levels were lower than they are today.
