Deer are wired in their thinking to live in herds. They are prey animals and by staying in a large group they have a less chance of being picked off and for a predator to be able to discern them from the mass of moving bodies. Also a deer benefits by being in a herd because they have a better chance of finding a mate, protection, and the wisdom of the older deer.
