Gun powder is the propellant used in older firearms to produce the gas which pushes the bullet out of the barrel. Newer guns use nitrocellulose based powder which is called smokeless powder to do the same thing.

There are also other methods to generate pressure such as compressed air or CO2, but generally they are nowhere near as powerful as gun powder.
