At it's narrowest point the Strait is only about 16 km. wide if you simply measure the distance using the scale on the Google Map of the Strait. However, if you do a search on the Strait of Gibraltar you will discover that the actual distance is only 14.3 km. That appears to be the most accurate answer. See the related link.

There are no direct flights from South Africa to Ireland. So you would have to take at least two flights. There are a wide range of choices. In terms of price then, there would be lots of variety and it would depend on other factors like what time of year and when in the week you were flying. Then there would be factors like from where in South Africa you were flying and to what other airport(s) before getting to Ireland. Prices change all the time. There is no simple answer to that question. Africa is a massive continent of many countries. Their distances from Ireland, vary greatly. There are no direct scheduled flights from Ireland to any country in Africa. So from Ireland people would fly to another European airport first and then on to whichever country they were going to. There would likely be a stopover time in the European airport before their flight to their destination. All of those factors would determine the actual time it would take to get to your destination. It would be at least 5 or 6 hours, if things were really quick and they were flying to an African country that was closer. For other parts you would be taking much longer flights.
