Why do snake's hiss?

Vipers hiss to say: "Leave me alone or I will bite hardly!"

Rattlesnakes hiss to say: "Leave me alone or I will rattle my tail or I will attack!"

Pythons hiss to say: "Leave me alone or I will squeeze you and kill you!"

All snakes have a reason to hiss.

When they are breathing in air,

hungry, smelling ( because they have no nostrils),

frightened, or it is just their way of saying hello:)

I have a python myself and it does it just for the fun i think because it has never bit or striked or even attempted to squeeze the life out of anyone, and it is four and a half years old...

There are two different things a snake does that people classify as 'hissing'. The first is just to stick it's tongue, it does this to taste and smell it's surroundings. The second classification of 'hissing' is when the snake rears back and opens it's mouth. A show of dominance and usually means it's ready to attack.
