A blizzard is defined as having winds of more than 35mph, and enough snow to limit the visibility to 500 feet or less. A severe blizzard has winds of over 45 mph, visibility near zero and temperatures of -12C. The origin of the word is obscure, but came into general use in the US after the hard winter of 1880/1881. American/English linked the word to a 'violent blow' or a 'violent snow or rain storm'
