Telescopes do not normally work well at night, unless you happen to be looking at stars and other planets. This is because the stars do not depend on our Sun shining on them to be bright.

Think of the stars as you would, say, a row of flashlights a block away. With the naked eye with no moon or streetlights, you may not be able to see much farther than 15 or 20 feet, yet those flashlights at the other end of the block are very easy to see. The stars are similar: they make their own light, and you can see them a looong way away.
