If you think in terms of energy in gets very simple and logical. If you have green light with energy E1 and red light with energy E2 (clearly E1 > E2), result of their mixing will some energy E = a*E1+bE2, where a and b fraction coefficients for both lights (a, b <=1, a + b =1). For instance, if you have only green light a = 1, b = 0, if you have only read light a = 0, b = 1. If you mix with a and b not equal to zero you will get result E2 < E < E1, but light with energy satisfying such inequality is yellow and orange (and their mix).
