Anything that is alive lives because it is a biochemical machine. It takes in "fuel" and the living material uses it to maintain, repair and build its own structure. Biochemical substances can be exceptionally complex, and the molecules of life demand that complexity. The element carbon can form more chemical compounds that all the other chemical elements combined. It is life's element of choice, and that is why we say that living things are carbon based.
