Please note that there are a few exceptions. The United States, mainly, does not - in practice, at least, they continue using the "imperial system", even though the metric system is "official" for quite a while now. Also, in many countries they continue mixing metric units with non-metric units. And for some specific units, non-metric units are still very common, for example the degree Centigrade instead of the Kelvin, and units other than the second for time.
Anyway, the reason for the popularity of the metric system is that it turned out to be very convenient to have shared units of measure. For example, before the metric system, people used pounds for both weight and mass. People tended to confuse the two concepts - some still do; but the real problem was that different countries, or regions, used different definitions of the pound. A pound in one country might weight more than a pound somewhere else.
