There are chloroplasts on the skin of a watermelon, along with other types of "chromoplasts" that perform functions in the development of the fruit and seeds. But while there may be "photosensitive" processes taking place in a green fruit, they are not making food for the plant. The avocado is a type of fruit whose green skin contributes to fruit growth, but not enough to function without materials from the plant leaves.

Scientists are investigating how these processes are important in limiting fruit size, contributing to seed development, or otherwise participating in the ripening function of fruit.
