Sandy was a hurricane (the 19th of the season) that formed in the Caribbean, traveled north over the Atlantic off the coast of the US, then veered suddenly west into New York and the vicinity. A hurricane is an extremely powerful cyclonic storm with winds exceeding 75 mph that can be hundreds of miles in diameter. Most hurricanes that have landfall on the US form in the Caribbean.

Sandy first became a tropical storm a few hours after forming on October 22, 2012. After becoming a hurricane on October 24, Sand briefly weakened back to a tropical storm on October 27 before restrengthening.
The coastal flooding was the result of something called a storm surge. This occurs when the winds of a hurricane drive ocean water onto land.
Hurricane Sandy was an unusually large and powerful storm and its great destructive potential was recognized days before its final landfall. Sandy merged with a non-tropical storm system in a manner similar to the Perfect Storm of 1991 and it technically was no longer a hurricane when it made landfall in New Jersey.

The full moon on the night of Hurricane Sandy was a result of the lunar cycle, which occurs approximately every 29.5 days. This specific full moon, known as the "blue moon," coincided with the storm, leading to higher tides and exacerbating coastal flooding. The combination of the storm surge from Sandy and the elevated tides made the impact of the hurricane even more severe for affected areas.
They chased the storm. The wind was strong but they fought it.
